Focus on High School Science: Inside the Labs

Grade 9 biologists took a closer look at the smallest building blocks of living things. Using microscopes, they examined living cheek and plant cells to spot and identify different organelles.

Grade 10 Chemistry students used chromatography and fluorescence to explore the difference between various over the counter pain medications, such as ibuprofen and acetaminophen. After quantifying these differences, students then predict the pain medications contained in an unknown solution.

The Grade 12 Honors Biology performed a bacterial transformation lab. The students introduced foreign DNA into bacteria that contained a specific gene that would turn the bacteria blue. The lab is part of a biotechnology unit in which students are learning how genetic material can be expressed in bacteria and alter their traits.
