Grade 5 Races Into Fractions
Grade 5 launched their new unit on multiplying fractions with an exciting project-based challenge. Students worked in small groups to design a 60K bike race route, mapping out medical tents, bathrooms, repair stations, and water stops, each spaced evenly along the course. Using their custom race maps on graph paper, students explored how to multiply a fraction by a whole number, applying math to a scenario they built themselves. The project strengthened their understanding of fractions while fostering collaboration, creativity, and real-world problem-solving.
