Heschel Commemorates Yom HaShoah

The Heschel School commemorated Yom HaShoah through the day through various in-school programming. Heschel honored survivors of the Shoah from within the Heschel community and remembered those whose lives were tragically lost. Heschel parents Ilan and Ayelet Richter spoke to Grades 4 and 5 about their grandparents' stories of being on Schindler's List (Ayelet) and saving children who were part of Dr. Mengele's twin studies (Ilan). Grade 5 students used Heschel’s Holocaust Commemoration Committee’s Archives, as well as family stories, to create and perform monologues of Heschel community members who survived the Shoah. Heschel High School heard from Stanley Berger about his experience being saved by a Polish priest, who became Pope John Paul II, and Jeannie Fisher, former head of the Holocaust Commemoration Committee and Heschel parent, shared her grandmother’s story with Grades 6 and 7. Community members also visited the Beit Knesset, which was transformed into a Memorial Room, to honor the memory of those who perished. The room featured photos of community members who were victims of the Shoah, a חומת הזכרון (Memorial Wall), and candles available for lighting.
