Judge Jesse Furman Visits Grade 4

Grade 4 students had the unique opportunity to welcome Judge Jesse Furman to Heschel as part of their year-long study of immigration. Judge Furman began the visit with an introduction to his role as a federal judge, describing what he does both in and out of the courtroom. He then led a discussion about naturalization ceremonies and shared the speech he typically gives during these events, including a personal reflection on his own family's immigration story and their journey to becoming American citizens. Judge Furman discussed the process of a naturalization ceremony, explaining how many people are naturalized at once, the variety of countries represented, and what the day means for those becoming citizens. Faculty member Maya Amir, who became a U.S. citizen earlier this year, also joined the conversation. She participated in a Q&A session, sharing her personal experiences and challenges on the path to citizenship. Her story added a powerful, real-life perspective to the day’s discussion.
