science
Young children naturally wonder and ask questions, and our science curriculum fosters their inquiry and investigation. Engaging in the scientific method, we observe, question, hypothesize, experiment, describe, and record data. The children talk about what they notice and document the process through illustrations, dictations, writing, and photographs. Early Childhood daily life is rich with science learning. We study natural items under magnifying glasses, explore the properties of sand and water, experiment with balance and engineering in the block area, and marvel at chemical changes during baking. Our Pre-Kindergarten and Kindergarten students tend to our greenhouse and communal gardens each week. They plant flower bulbs, examine insects, and harvest vegetables and herbs.
Throughout the school year, science is integrated into our thematic units. We learn about biological science through the seasons, fruits and seeds, animal habitats/hibernation, the life cycle of bees and pollination, and the metamorphosis of butterflies. In addition, we study the physical branch of science through topics including light and shadow, sound and instruments, melting and freezing, and composting and recycling. The children’s personal interests often spark group investigations.
