Humanities

The humanities program challenges students to read deeply, to analyze literature, and to interpret and understand historical texts. Students practice writing to think through frequent in-class journal-writing. Research projects help students to formalize their writing, as they learn to distinguish between reliable and unreliable sources in print and online. Speaking and active listening skills are also refined to encourage higher-level thinking and discussion.

Literary selections include: The Giver by Lois Lowry, Animal Farm by George Orwell, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Night by Elie Wiesel, “A Midsummer Night’s Dream” and “Romeo and Juliet” by William Shakespeare.

Social studies topics include: Ancient Egypt, the Silk Road, the United States Constitution, the Civil Rights Movement, the Holocaust, and the History of the State of Israel.
